How to know what breed is suitable for you?

Pre-Selection To-Do List
  1. Do research about different dog breeds. Pay special attention to what to expect in terms of size, shedding, temperament and common health problems.
  2. Talk to people who have a dog that is the breed you are interested in. Ask a lot of questions!
  3. Do not get a dog whose breed’s energy level or temperament is incompatible with your lifestyle. If you’re lazy, don’t get an active working breed and vice versa!
Should you consider a working breed dog?

Working breeds like Border Collies and German Shepherds are beautiful, intelligent, and popular pets, but they may not be the best fit for your family.

  • Working breeds are high energy dogs! They require a higher level of physical and mental stimulation!
  • If left under stimulated, many working breeds can become destructive, anxious, or aggressive.
  • Herding breed dogs that do not receive enough regular exercise, can become very nippy and ‘herd’ members of their family or other dogs.
  • If you decide on a working breed dog, be prepared to give the dog a ‘job’ such as obedience training or agility. Note! Unemployed working dogs are often miserable!
What other factors should I consider in a breed?
  • The size of the dog when full grown.
  • How much does the breed typically shed? Do they need regular grooming?
  • What is the typical energy level of the breed?
  • What was the breed originally bred to do? This will affect their personality!
  • What is the typical prey drive level of this breed? This can be difficult to control especially if you are a first time dog owner.
  • Is this breed typically good with children and strangers? This is important if you wish to have a social and friendly dog!
